Next Meeting: 10/03/2010 Thursday, Feb 25 2010

Dear All,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Renaissance Reading Group took a
hiatus this week. However, we will be back on Wednesday 10th March at 4
p.m. to discuss John Webster’s _The White Devil._ We will be meeting in
the Postgraduate Common Room, barring any room clashes, but if necessary
we will reconvene in the pub! Everyone welcome, new members and old.

Best Wishes,
Briony and Jem

Apologies Wednesday, Feb 10 2010

Ahem. Apologies to anyone who turned up at the SCR looking for us today. A scheduling clash managed to slip past our notice and the room was being used for an open day event, forcing us to relocate elsewhere without advance notice. Apparently the clash will be the status quo for the next few weeks, so we will be making use of other venues – these will, however, be signposted this time. Again, sorry!

Thanks to those of you who did manage to come along, room changes and all. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Next Meeting: Wednesday 10th February 2010 Saturday, Feb 6 2010

Dear All,

The Renaissance Reading Group will meet next Wednesday 10th February at
4 p.m. in the SCR. We will be reading John Lyly’s _Endymion_, so join us
for a discussion of a very Elizabethan tale of love, sorcery, damsels
confined to castles, magic fountains, and a hero bewitched into
enchanted sleep.

Best Wishes,
Briony and Jem

Next Meeting: Wednesday 27th January 2010 Tuesday, Jan 26 2010

Dear All,

The Renaissance Reading Group will be meeting on Wednesday 27th of January 2010 at 4 p.m. in the SCR. In the no doubt gloriously misguided expectation that everyone will have found acres of free time over the winter vacation in which to read it, we will be discussing Middleton’s _A Faire Quarrel._ Drinks are optional afterwards – and suggestions for a new (preferably more local) venue, would be welcome.

Best,

Briony and Jem.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 16th December 2009 Monday, Dec 7 2009

Dear All,

The next (and this term’s final) meeting of the Renaissance Reading
Group will take place on Wednesday 16th of December at 4 p.m. in the
Senior Common Room. Inspired by the rather grim and tempestuous weather,
the text we will be reading is Marston’s witchy tragedy _Sophonisba_.
Drinks optional later on.

To give you advance notice, the first text to kick off next term’s
meetings will be Middleton’s _A Faire Quarrel._ We will be rechecking
the timetable for a better slot as the schedule resuffles for the new
term. However, provisionally, the first meeting will be on Wednesday
27th of January at 4 p.m. in the Senior Common Room. Confirmation or
change of days will be circulated nearer the time. As always, we would
like to encourage M.A. and 3rd year B.A students to come along and join
in, especially if you’re looking for dissertation ideas or thinking of
going on to future degrees.

Best Wishes

Briony and Jem

Next Meeting: 25th November 2009 Thursday, Nov 19 2009

Dear All,

Once again, apologies for the hiatus in meetings and thanks to all who responded with views on the suggested meeting days and times. We have rather sheepishly concluded that there is no better alternative than to meet every other Wednesday (slotting in around the Early Modern Seminars) at 4 p.m. in the Senior Common Room. Consequently, the next reading group meeting will take place on Wednesday 25th November at 4 p.m. in the SCR. The text on the table will be Marvell’s _Rehearsal Transpros’d._

There will be the option of meeting for drinks at the White Hart later on (c. 8 p.m.) for those who are interested.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Update Monday, Nov 9 2009

Dear All,

Fear not, the Renaissance Reading Group has not been abandoned. We’ve run into some scheduling issues over this year’s wonderfully hectic timetable! For those of you interested in attending, we’re currently trying to choose a new slot in which to meet and would like some input on the least inconvenient time possible (bearing in mind that some sort of scheduling clash seems to be inevitable!).

The options available are currently:

Tuesdays 5 p.m. or later

Wednesday 4 p.m or later

Friday 4 p.m or later

We would like to establish a regular meeting time if possible and any of these slots would be used on a biweekly basis, not a weekly one. We are also open to alternative suggestions if any one can come up with a better one!

Ideally, we would like as many people as possible to be able to attend (much easier to have a discussion that way), so if you are interested in coming along, please comment on this post or drop both of the conveners an email at b.s.frost@ex.ac.uk and jcb220@ex.ac.uk.

We’ll keep you posted on the new arrangements asap!

Many Thanks!

21/10/2009 Tuesday, Oct 6 2009

Dear All,

The first meeting of the Renaissance Reading Group will take place on Wednesday 21/10/2009, at 4 p.m. in the Senior Common Room. The text is A Game At Chess. The convenors welcome the old members back and anticipate another year of scintillating discussions, obscure materials and shared obsessions. To all newcomers, we look forward to meeting you and to hearing your contributions. Once the session has closed, we will reconvene for more general chit-chat over the White Hart’s finest beverages at 8 p.m.

See you soon!

Texts and Times Tuesday, Sep 29 2009

Dear all,

The Renaissance Reading Group is about to kick off for a new term. We’re planning ahead this year to give you all time to start reading. First up (despite earlier announcements) is going to be A Game At Chess. For those of you who read the Marvel, Rehearsal Transpros’d over the summer, your efforts weren’t in vain! We’ll be discussing that at the second meeting instead. We, the convenors, thought a more provocative start would be good to get the brains back on track after a long summer engaged with other things!

So, week one: A Game At Chess.
Week Two:  Rehearsal Transpros’d.

We’re going to alternate between plays/poems and sermons/prose, throughout. We’ve got a huge selection of texts to read already and, once we’ve got the hang of polling on this site, we’ll put the options to a vote on a weekly basis. In the meantime, feel free to email either of us with further ideas or requests. Our addresses circulate on the regular emails, one of which will be coming soon. We’re just waiting to hear from the EMS as to when they will be running again, as the plan is to follow last year’s rota and alternate with them on a bi-weekly basis, probably Wednesdays, 4-5pm in the Senior Common Room.

We will also be hoping to entice everyone down to the White Hart from 8pm the same evening to give those of you with childcare a chance to go home for a few hours.

Welcome back!

Hail fellow, well met! Monday, Sep 14 2009
